FORMER Dunfermline Rugby Club star Murray McCallum has been named in the Scotland squad for the upcoming Autumn Nations Series.

The 25-year-old, who currently plays for Glasgow Warriors, is one of 42 players selected by Gregor Townsend for four matches, kicking off against Tonga a week on Saturday.

McCallum, who came through the ranks at McKane Park before going on to play for Heriot's and Edinburgh Rugby, was selected in a 36-man pool for a two-day training camp at the Oriam facility in Edinburgh this week.

Following that, head coach Townsend has brought him into the squad to face Tonga, Australia, world champions South Africa and Japan, with McCallum seeking to add to his three senior caps.

The prop forward, a former pupil at Woodmill High School before going on to receive a scholarship to study at Strathallan School, made his Scotland debut in 2018.

He came on as a replacement in a 34-7 Six Nations defeat to Wales in Cardiff, becoming the 1,090th player to represent the national side in the process.

McCallum has made two further senior appearances - against Canada and the USA during a summer tour in the same year - and will hope to add to his cap tally in the coming weeks.

After making 63 appearances for Edinburgh since making his professional debut for the capital club in 2016, he switched to Glasgow in July on a short-term deal, making his first appearance for the Warriors against Ulster last month.

McCallum is one of 17 Glasgow players in the squad and, speaking to the Scottish Rugby website, Townsend commented: "There have been some notable performances from both our home-based players and those at clubs outside of Scotland, which has enabled us as coaches to select a group which are playing well and will be motivated across the four games.

"We also feel that this the right time to bring in some younger players given their early season form. They have created opportunities for themselves to represent their country and we believe that they will thrive in the Test match environment."

Scotland face Tonga at BT Murrayfield on Saturday October 30, then face Australia and South Africa in two, sold-out matches on Sunday November 7, and Saturday November 13 respectively.

The series finishes against Japan on Saturday November 20, for which tickets are still available, along with the Tonga match.
