MATTY TODD hopes that netting his first Pars goal did his family proud – and had words of thanks for those who helped him achieve it.

The 20-year-old, a former Dunfermline High School pupil and product of the Fife Elite Football Academy, was handed his first start of the season by interim managers Steven Whittaker and Greg Shields against Greenock Morton on Saturday.

And, in his 23rd appearance for the Athletic first team, he headed in Kevin O’Hara’s cross for only the second senior goal of his career.

The other came during a loan spell with Brechin City last season and, although the 3-1 defeat wasn’t what Todd was looking for, it was nevertheless a moment to savour with his parents watching on, having been told the day before the match he would be starting.

And, speaking to Press Sport, he was delighted with the faith shown in him by Whittaker and Shields – and the encouragement and advice he has received from summer arrival Graham Dorrans.

“It’s not the result the boys wanted. We’ve not been playing too well recently but today was a great moment for myself and my family. I’m just delighted with it,” he said post-match.

“It was a really proud moment for my family I hope and I’m just delighted that it’s my first career Dunfermline goal. I didn’t have a clue what to do when the ball hit the net!

“It’s things that I’ve wanted to add to my game, goals and assists, so hopefully this is the start of some more goals and assists into my game.

“I was just excited to be back involved with the boys. Steven and Greg have just showed faith in me and I’m thankful to them for showing that faith in me.

“Since Steven came in last summer, it’s been great working with him. It’s somebody else showing faith in me.

“Graham Dorrans is another man to ask. You can lean on his shoulder, ask him questions and he is always there for help. I am thankful to the two of them and Graham for helping me out this week.”

Todd added: “Graham is a great help behind the scenes with the boys.

“His experience off the park is second to none so I am thankful for his help. He is there to answer questions if I need it. If not, I know my job on the pitch.”
