THE Proclaimers have announced that they're coming to Dunfermline.

Craig and Charlie Reid, plus special guests, will be playing a gig at the Alhambra Theatre.

Known for hit songs such as Letter from America and I'm Gonna Be (500 miles), the brothers from Auchtermuchty are a hugely popular act that have sold more than five million albums.

The gig in Dunfermline is a year away – it's on November 25, 2022 – but tickets go on sale this Friday at 9am.

In a recent interview with the Herald, our sister paper, Craig recalled: “We’d been in bands from the age of 15 and while we got better every time, we felt we weren’t really doing things musically that we wanted to.

“When we started The Proclaimers in early 1983, as just two voices and a guitar, the songs were better straight away.”

One of their first demos was heard by Kevin Rowland of Dexy’s Midnight Runners.

He gave them studio time in Birmingham and the twins recorded four songs – Letter From America, Misty Blue, Sky Takes The Soul and The First Attack.

The Proclaimers were invited to support The Housemartins on their UK tour, reaching their biggest audience to date. This brought them to the attention of John Williams of Chrysalis Records.

“Until then we’d been getting a lot of rejection,” revealed Craig.

“I remember going down to London on the overnight bus to hand in our tape to record companies. We never got one reply. I assume they went straight into the bin.”

But in early 1987, Chrysalis offered the band a deal. They began recording This Is The Story within five days of signing.

They went on to enjoy huge success, Letter from America reached number three in the UK charts, and followed that up with Sunshine on Leith and a further nine studio albums, as well as three compilations.

The Proclaimers music, described as a mix of post-punk and folk, has seen them notch up more than five million album sales while I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) has become a cult classic around the world, and was famously covered for Comic Relief by Peter Kay.

Tickets go on general sale on Friday November 26 at 9am from the box office in the Kingsgate shopping centre or online from Ticketmaster.
