A DUNFERMLINE comic writer is spearheading a day of celebration of Scottish comic books.

Colin Maxwell came up with the idea of holding a Scottish Comic Book Day and the event will take place on Saturday.

Although mainly online, it will also include events including one at the Little Shop of Heroes in Dunfermline which is set to host special guests to mark the occasion.

Artist and writer Colin, who is an animation and computer games lecturer at Fife College, said he was keen to raise the profile of all things Scottish connected to the industry.

"It was International Comic Book Day a couple of months ago and the first I heard of it was on that day. I happened to see it mentioned on social media and thought how did I not know about this?" he explained.

"I thought why don't we have a Scottish one? Scotland has got a big influence on comic books. Some of the basics of comic books were invented in Scotland – speech bubbles and sound effects – and there are tonnes of great Scottish writers and artists that have gone on to do amazing stuff and have films and TV shows based on their work.

"It is an opportunity to try and sell ourselves."

Colin, who writes for Commando, said anyone with a link to Scottish comic books is being invited to get involved using the hashtag #scottishcomicbookday.

"We are expecting people to share information about work, pictures of their work, what they are working on just now, we have got a whole bunch of facts and figures about Scottish comics and famous comic people," he said.

"We are encouraging people to get involved. It is not just about yourself, it is about giving other people a boost as well.

"We are also going to run a competition online as well and comic creators have donated books and artwork for that."
