CROSSGATES PRIMROSE’S date with destiny in the Alex Jack Cup is set to take place next year after Sunday’s final was postponed.

Alan Campbell’s East of Scotland League, Premier Division team were set to face First Division, Conference A outfit Leith Athletic in the showpiece at Kelty Hearts’ New Central Park only for it to be called off due to the weather.

Overnight snowfall and cold temperatures made the surface unplayable, meaning Primrose will have to wait a little longer for their first appearance in a cup final since 1995, when they lost out to Newburgh in the Kingdom Cup.

No new date has been announced yet for the conclusion of the competition, which offers the winning side a possible route into the senior Scottish Cup, alongside those who are successful in the South of Scotland Alba Cup and Strathclyde Demolition Cup competitions, via a play-off, but Campbell said: “It’s going to be in the spring. To be honest, that’s when a cup final should be played, and it’s something to look forward to. The reasoning behind it is that you still run into the same issues over the next few weeks. They’ve probably made the right call; if they scheduled it over the next couple of weeks, you’re still waiting on the weather. It’s a bit disappointing but if you have a final at the end of November, you run the risk of coming into difficulties with the weather.”

With their shot at glory having been put on the back burner for now, Crossgates return to league action this weekend at promotion-chasing Tranent.

Only one match involving a West Fife side took place on Saturday but it ended in disappointment for Rosyth in the second round of the King Cup. They hosted fellow First Division, Conference A side Dunipace and, after half an hour, found themselves two goals behind. Regan Lumsden halved the deficit before the break, with Kyle Walls responding to a third Dunipace goal on the hour, but the visitors added a fourth.

Rosyth were awarded a penalty with five minutes left, with Lumsden seeing his effort saved, but suffered a blow as striker Tam Hampson was forced off with a broken collarbone sustained in the challenge.
