RAIL commuters are facing disruption this afternoon as some services face cancellation and delays in preparation for the arrival of Storm Barra.

A yellow warning for wind has been issued by the Met Office from 9am this morning (Tuesday) until midnight for parts of Fife.

Strong gusts are expected to affect much of the UK, with some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport likely.

A yellow warning for snow is also in place for some parts of the country and, ahead of the weather warnings in place across much of its network, rail operator Scotrail have issued updated service information.

From 3pm, they have said that they will withdraw their regular Edinburgh to Cowdenbeath services for the remainder of the day, while trains between the capital and Arbroath will only go as far north as Dundee.

A limited service is in place between Dundee and Aberdeen due to speed restrictions, while LNER have said that their 2pm and 4pm London King's Cross to Aberdeen trains will now terminate at Edinburgh Waverley, and will not call at Haymarket, Inverkeithing, Kirkcaldy, Leuchars, Dundee, Arbroath, Montrose, Stonehaven and Aberdeen.

Forecasters said: "A deep area of low pressure moving in across the UK from the Atlantic is likely to bring high winds to many parts of the UK. Strong winds arriving into the west through the morning, spreading inland and reaching eastern areas through the afternoon and early evening.

"Gusts of 45-50 mph are expected widely, with 60-70 mph in exposed coastal locations. Strongest winds will ease across inland areas into the overnight period."
