A ROSYTH family got festive at the weekend for a special Santa run in memory of their beloved dad and grandad.

The fundraiser was the latest effort from Lynn Hastings and her niece, Lauren Smith, to help Maggie's.

As reported previously in the Press, the pair were spurred into action to help the vital cause earlier this year after both Lynn's parents, Michael and Irena, were told they had terminal cancer within days of each other.

Sadly, Michael died in September, a day after celebrating the completion of a 50-mile charity challenge undertaken by his daughter and grand-daughter.

Sunday's walk – which took in more than seven miles from Irena's Walter Hay Court home to Pittencrieff Park and back – was especially poignant for the family as it was the day before what would have been Michael's 75th birthday.

"It was very challenging for us but was great spreading some festive cheer," said Lynn. "People were videoing us and almost every car was beeping, waving, putting thumbs up, flashing their lights. We want to thank everyone for their support as that is what spurred us on.

"We are overwhelmed by the amount of people who gave us amazing support for what we were doing. People were putting money in the wee box and we have raised around £95 just from the day."

Since the shock diagnosis, Lynn and Lauren, who carried out Sunday's walk in a Santa-carrying-elf suit and an inflatable gingerbread outfit, have raised £2,000 for Maggie's.

Lynn said her mum is "up and down" as she continues her battle with cancer.

"Every day is a special day – we are making the most of every day as much as we possibly can and trying to be as upbeat as possible," she added. "We are just deciding what we are going to come up with next for the fundraising, nothing is stopping us."
