THE Inverkeithing community has rallied to help raise nearly £3,000 to help with the funeral costs of a local man who died last month.

John Hendry died suddenly at the age of 56 and, after discovering he had no life insurance, efforts were made to ensure he had the send-off he deserved.

Local barber Kate McQuillan, from Divit barbers by Kate, organised a charity hair cut day which raised more than £1,200.

"We worked for six hours from 12 o'clock to 6pm just for donations and we raised £1,230.65," she explained. "It just shows you when something goes wrong, the community pulls together.

"John played in a group that played pool and the last couple of weekends when playing, they have been putting their winnings towards his funeral.

"Between a private donation and the pool team, they raised £1,500. It has brought the whole community together."

Ventilation engineer John, who had a daughter Tracie, stepdaughter Allana and four grandchildren, lived in Hillfield Crescent before his death on November 26.

His sister, Ann Gordon, said the family were "overwhelmed" with what had been happening for her brother.

"I can say thank you but that is what you say for giving someone a cup of coffee – these words are not enough to let people know how we feel," she said.

"John was the life and soul of every party. He kept everyone entertained. He liked singing in the karaoke and would give his last penny to whoever needed it.

"I would like to thank everyone for what they have done over the past three weeks."

A funeral service for John was held at Dunfermline Crematorium on Friday.
