NEW HOMES are planned at the former Pitcorthie Primary School site to boost the affordable housing stock in Dunfermline.

Proposals have been brought forward for 34 new homes at Aberdour Road by Robertson Homes in partnership with Fife Council.

The site became vacant following the controversial decision to close the former school in July 2015.

Less than a year later, part of the land was earmarked for a new nursery as part of protocol by the Scottish Government to increase early years learning provision.

The housing development will be built adjacent to the new nursery, which opened in August, with access to the site from Aberdour Road.

A mix of bungalows, semi-detached, terraced and detached housing will be available, and all will have a private front drive.

A planning statement reads: "Streets have been designed to prioritise pedestrians. Pedestrian routes have been designed to address key desire lines through the site, safe routes to school, and other key amenities and services.

"The proximity of these services and amenities will actively encourage cycling and walking. Safe pedestrian access is also provided directly into the nursery from the site.

"Landscaping is provided to create a sense of place and to enhance the biodiversity qualities of the site.

"New homes will meet varying needs of all potential future occupants.

"Materials will be selected to compliment existing homes in the local area, whilst also providing its own character to create a sense of place.

"It provides good-quality, new, affordable homes, within a very sustainable location."

It's the second former school site in recent weeks to see an application for new housing.

A brownfield site where the former Blacklaw Primary School sat could soon have 85 affordable homes.

Fife Council has also teamed up with Robertson Partnership Homes for this proposed new development at the site of the former school, which was shut in 2005 and later demolished.

A mix of single-, two- and three-storey houses, as well as detached, semi-detached and terraced dwellings, have been proposed for the site at Blacklaw Road.

If both are approved, the developments will help the council meet its ambitious target of creating 3,500 affordable homes in the region by the end of 2022.
