YOUNGSTERS with Dunfermline Track and Field will compete in a brand-new event on Saturday as reward for excellent displays in a national competition.

Under-12 youngsters Lottie Thomas, Sophie Jenkinson, Murron Kane and Abbey McAndrew were one of three teams that the club entered into the 4J Studios Scottish Athletics Superteams event, which is regarded as a stepping stone towards competitive athletics for younger athletes.

Two girls' teams, and a boys' side, took part and all four athletes in each took part in a 60 metres sprint, long jump, shot put and 4x200m relay.

Dunfermline Track and Field's girls' A team enjoyed terrific success, winning a bronze medal, and that has earned them a place in a new event – Dynamic New Athletics (DNA) – this weekend.

Competing against 35 other teams, the A squad scored a total of 997 points across the day, which left them just 10 points behind the winners, Giffnock North AC, six behind second-placed Airdrie Harriers Girls' A, and just five ahead of Pitreavie AAC girls' A.

In the 60m sprints, all four of Dunfermline's competitors were strong, with Lottie running a time of 9.15 seconds; Sophie finishing in a PB of 9.37; Murron crossing the line in 9.39; and Abbey completing the race in 10.18.

A long jump distance of 3.46m, and a shot put throw of 3.98m, saw Lottie earned 194 points for the team – the seventh-highest individual total in the girls' events among almost 180 athletes – while Sophie, with an impressive 4.07m in the shot put, and 3.35m in the long jump, claimed 188 and finished 10th in the overall placings.

Murron's terrific throw of 4.57m was the team's strongest in the shot put, while Abbey enjoyed an excellent long jump of 3.00m, before the team came together to win the relay by almost 50m in a time of 2:09.

Their third-place finish, and bronze medal, will now see them take part in the DNA Kids event, which takes place alongside the European Athletics DNA match that is taking place at Glasgow's Emirates Arena.

Offering a mixed-team, multi-event competition, the athletes will compete in the same disciplines as in the Superteams before the international match, for which they will also receive tickets.

A club spokesperson said: "The club's reward for the girls' third-place finish is an invitation to compete in a new event Dynamic New Athletics (DNA), on February 5, which is a mixed-gender, fast-paced, compact team event which takes place over just two hours.

"What an opportunity for our young athletes on an international stage."

The girls' B team of Poppy Warner, Caitlin Chalmers, Ana Stobie and Lily Pritchard finished a credible 13th out of the 36 teams, with all four contributing healthily to their points total.

Ana's 9.77 in the 60m gained an impressive 76 points, and all four were separated by just eight at the conclusion, with Poppy and Caitlin producing fine long jumps of 3.13m and 3.12m, while Caitlin and Lily threw impressive efforts of 3.94m and 3.42m in the shot put.

In the relay, they finished with a time of 2:21.

Sean Asamoah, Lochlan Walker, Jayden MacKay and Callan Lennie made up the club's solitary boys' team and, in a field of 25, they finished 11th.

Sean was the highest-placed boy in 16th spot out of almost 130 athletes where, as expected, his 9.38 in the 60m was a heavy points scorer with 83, and he continued with his strong performances in the long jump, where he leaped 3.50m, and in the shot put, where he threw an impressive 4.87m, giving him a personal points total of 203.

The other boys contributed well, with Jayden running a solid 10.28 in the 60m, in which Lochlan ran 10.1, while Callan, the youngest and least experienced, gained 42 points and threw a fine 3.49m in the shot put, with the team running the relay in 2:20.
