TWO Dunfermline Track and Field Club runners enjoyed silver linings by storming to medal glory at the 4J Studios Scottish Athletics National Indoor Combined Events Championships.

Charlie Hunter, who competes at under-13 level, and Darcie Black, an under-17 athlete, both picked up silver medals at the competition, which was held at Glasgow's Emirates Arena over the last weekend in January.

In what was a stunning performance from Charlie in the boys' competition, he set four new personal bests out of the five events in which he took part.

Those came in the 60 metres hurdles, which he won, in 10.99 seconds; the 800m, in which he was second, with a time of 2:51.65; the shot put, where a throw of 6.18m saw him place second; and the high jump, where his leap of 1.37m saw him place second and was an improvement of 11 centimetres on his previous best.

He also topped the rankings in the long jump, with an effort of 4.10m, which gave him a total of 1,259 points for a silver-medal finish behind Abraham Lanahan, of Shettleston Harriers, who scored 1,460.

That achievement was followed by another medal win for Darcie, whose performance included a club record and PB in the shot put of 10.79m, which saw her finish first in that discipline.

Although she was just short of her best efforts in the other events, she did place second in both the 60m hurdles (9.30) and high jump (1.57m); third in the long jump (5.18m); and sixth in a strong 800m field of 20 athletes (3:05.47) to collect 3,055 points and take the silver medal behind Inverness Harriers AAC's Stroma Fraser (3,210).

Elsewhere in the under-17 age group, Kirstin Penman produced PBs in the 60m hurdles (10.11), shot put (7.52m) and high jump, where she cleared 1.39m, a four-centimetre improvement on her previous best, and went on to place 11th overall with a points haul of 2,320.

Four first-year under-13s – Lottie Thomas, Murron Kane, Molly Robinson and Caitlin Chalmers – made their Combined Events Championships debut and produced some fine performances.

New bests of 11.31 in the 60m hurdles and of 4.12m in the shot put were earned by Lottie; Molly recorded four in total, with the pick being a leap of 1.22m in the high jump; Murron threw an impressive 4.52m in her first competitive shot put, as well as three more PBs; and Caitlin threw a best of 5.14m in the shot put, as well as recording a PB of 0.90m in the high jump.

Rachel Barnett and Sarah Kane were in action in the under-15 girls' section, with the latter producing a PB of 4.09m in the long jump, only to have to withdraw before the end after injuring herself in her hurdles race.
