ATHLETES with Dunfermline Track and Field were at the top of the class as they excelled at the Rotary International Scottish Schools' Athletic Association (SSAA) Indoor Track and Field Championships.

No fewer than nine medals were won by club members at the event, which was held at Glasgow's Emirates Arena over the weekend of February 9-10, which included gold for Callum Newton.

The Kinross High School pupil, who also won a silver medal in the boys' under-16 high jump with a leap of 1.70 metres, took top spot in his age category's 60 metres hurdles, bettering his qualifying time of 8.79 seconds to cross the winning line in 8.65.

That race also saw Brook Ferguson, of Inverkeithing High, place fifth in 9.77, while Shayna Asamoah and Sophie Thomas both reached the find of the under-16 girls' 200m.

Shayna, who attends Dollar Academy, came through her heat, and then her semi-final, in times of 26.96 and 26.62 before improving on those with an effort of 25.80 – a new under-17 girls' club record – in the final, which gave her a silver medal.

There were improved times for Sophie, who also attends Dollar, on her way to the final of 27.46 and 26.65, with her run of 26.56, a new PB, in the final giving her a fifth-place finish, which she bettered in the 60m.

With a time of 7.94 – which broke her own club age group record – Sophie won bronze, with Shayna winning silver in a time of 7.92, which also saw her break her own age group and club record.

Elsewhere on the track, Darcie Black, who attends Dunfermline High, set a new club record of 9.06 to win silver in the over-16 girls' 60m hurdles, while Munro Strachan set a new under-17 indoor boys' club record of 4:37.47 in the over-16 boys' 1500m.

Medals continued to be won in the field events, where Mya McMahon continued her impressive form, with the Dunfermline High pupil winning silver in the over-16 girls' long jump with a club record effort of 5.33m.

In the high jump, Matthew Tait, of Lasswade High, equalled his own club record of 1.95m to take over-16 boys' silver, a colour of medal also won by Queen Anne's Ellie Candlish in the under-16 girls' event, with a leap of 1.55m.

There were a number of other excellent performances from club athletes throughout the competition, as well as new best times.

A time of 2:41.39 was a season's best in the under-16 girls' 800m for Queen Anne's Rachel Barnett; Sarah Kane, of Dunfermline High, ran just outside her PB in the under-16 girls' semi-finals; while Woodmill High's Oliver Morrison finished fifth in the under-16 boys' 800m 'A' final, and seventh in the high jump.

Darcie Black was sixth in her age group's long jump, while Amy Jenkinson (Dollar), who also competed in the high jump, and Kirstin Penman (Queen Anne) were unfortunate not to make the under-16 girls' 60m hurdles final, as were David Cuthbert and Mark Harley (both Kinross) in the under-16 boys' 800m, but who managed to pick up PBs of 2:14.66 and 2:17.88.
