AN INVERKEITHING fishmongers has celebrated trawling up a massive 100 years in the business this week.

HS Murray was first established in 1922 by Henry Murray, who started in Dunlop Terrace before moving to Church Street in 1922 and becoming sole proprietor in 1923.

It moved to its current base in Hope Street in the 1960s following a compulsory property purchase from the the council.

After Henry's death in 1963, son Willie then took over the shop and he ran it until his sudden death in 1973. His widow, Elsie, then took charge until their son, Douglas, took over the reins in 1992.

Douglas and his team – which includes van driver and Scottish Cup-winning Pars captain Roy Barry – held a celebration last week in which friends of the shop gathered to toast the special birthday.

"I didn't think I would be almost 40 years in the trade but here we are," said Douglas. "It is like all businesses, it has had its ups and downs but the last wee while, we have been going from strength to strength.

"One person I would like to mention is Jimmy Herriott, who came into the business in 1944 and did 50 years until 1994. He then worked part-time for a few years. My dad passed away in the early seventies and my mum came in and we had two shops and Jimmy kept one of them going – he was instrumental.

"I have also got van driver Roy Barrie who will be 80 this year. He is still as fit as a fiddle and is very popular.

"He was captain of Dunfermline and lifted the cup and he was the last man to do so. He doesn't just deliver fish – he takes time with people.

"We have a good team. We have two full-time guys, Stephen and George, and a part-time fish-filleter Bennie who is like having Messi on the bench. He has nearly 50 years of experience and retired two years ago and came walking into our shop and said he had moved over here and asked do you need a hand."

Piper Brooklyn Morris, from Inverkeithing High, provided music for the birthday celebration while staff and customers enjoyed a glass of fizz to mark the occasion.
