A SPEED survey is to take place on Lapwing Drive in a bid to stop dangerous driving.

Residents raised concerns with local councillors after speeding and parking problems surfaced on the Dunfermline street.

Councillor David Ross has been following up on what can be done to combat the issues.

He said: “There are two things – I was contacted last year about cars parking on the street; there is a new development being built and there were cars parked near McDonald Street at the junction making it very difficult to turn left into the street.

“No waiting measures are to be put in to stop vehicles parking there.

“The other thing was Amazon lorries. There are lots going down Sandpiper Drive and some on Lapwing Drive, there was some concern about these speeding.

“In December, I asked for a speed survey to take place, they said yes, and when I chased it up they said it was due to happen this week.

“I have asked residents to keep me informed with whether this happens.”

Double yellow lines were announced for the street in December, at the time Dunfermline South councillor James Calder said: “I am delighted that transportation have taken such quick action on this instance.

“Due to new developments, many vehicles were obstructing the road and it has been a danger.”

However, that was not the end for traffic problems on the street, despite a 40mph speed limit, residents have noticed cars and lorries taking liberties.

Cllr Ross said that his post on Facebook, asking people to look out for the survey, received a large amount of attention, with many residents pointing out further issues which had not been addressed so far.

“There are some concerns that it will be very obvious that it is taking place and so everyone will slow down, but lots of people are happy about it taking place,” he explained.

“There are also worries about a crossing for school children but when I enquired about this, they said there would not be an assessment until the housebuilding was complete – we don’t want anyone getting hurt or knocked over.

“There have also been reports about speeding on Sandpiper Drive and from the roundabout nearby.

“I will be following up all concerns raised.”

Cllr Calder said he would like to see a reduction in the speed limit on the street.

He commented: “I am pleased that there is to be a speed survey at Lapwing Drive – a number of residents have complained both about the noise of vehicles and also the danger to children crossing this stretch of road.

“I believe there should, at a minimum, be a crossing at the bottom of Lapwing Drive to ensure children’s safety but I would like to see a speed limit reduction to 30mph.

“This would alleviate these issues and increase safety. I have previously called for these changes, including reducing the speed limit.

“Hopefully, this survey will be the first step to these changes.”

Service manager Martin Kingham confirmed that the council had received a request to look at speed compliance on the road.

He added: “While 40mph is normal for this type of road, we do listen to public perceptions and so we’re gathering data to check that drivers are obeying the speed limit.”
