BABCOCK are looking for 20 new apprentices to join their Rosyth workforce in August.

The dockyard owners have positions available for new recruits in electrical, mechanical, welding, fabrication, pipe-fitting and machining.

Anyone interested in hands-on technical experience, while also undertaking a college course on a part-time basis, is encouraged to apply.

David Nicoll, 21, is a first-year mechanical apprentice, and said: “As part of the apprenticeship programme I am developing new skills, gaining practical experience and learning about mechanical systems.

"Looking ahead, I would like to study for a mechanical engineering degree and progress my career at Babcock."

Caitlin Thomson, also 21, a third-year electrical design apprentice, added: “I like getting to see how the STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Maths) subjects we were taught individually at school work together as one in a practical application.

"I also enjoy learning about how the company support in-service platforms and new-builds along with the design standards I have to use.””.

As part of Scottish Apprenticeship Week, Babcock conducted a number of presentations at local schools and hosted a female site tour on International Women’s Day, with the aim of encouraging female pupils to consider pursuing careers in STEM-related industries.

Sean Donaldson, managing director of Babcock’s Rosyth site, who himself started as an apprentice electrical fitter, said: “We are really excited to welcome new apprentices to the Rosyth site and to help the business develop its next generation of talent.”
