YOUNGSTERS with Dunfermline Track and Field Club picked up a winners' trophy at a brand-new athletics event held recently.

As a reward for impressive performances at the 4J Studios Scottish Athletics Superteams competition, two teams from the club were invited to take part in the kids' event at the Dynamic New Athletics (DNA) meet at Glasgow's Emirates Arena.

A team-based competition created by European Athletics, the aim of DNA is to target younger audience and participant groups through the use of mixed gender teams, a compact programme of interchangeable disciplines and head-to-head competition in the field events, where every attempt counts towards the team match score.

Prior to the main competition, the top teams from the Superteams, which was held in January, took part in a 'DNA Kids' event, which consisted of a 60-metres sprint, shot put, long jump, and 4x200m relay.

Points were awarded based on each athlete's performance in the individual events, with the combined total determining the standings before the relays, which, by the end, Dunfermline and Field's 'A' team had collected the winners' trophy.

Sophie Jenkinson, Sean Asamoah, Lochlan Walker and Lottie Thomas proved victorious, while the 'B' team of Murron Kane, Finlay Gibson, Jaden MacKay and Abby McAndrew also impressed.

In the 60m, the club registered six new personal bests, and two season's bests, with blistering runs from Sean and Lottie helping them to first and second respectively, with Murron placing fifth.

In the long jump, seven out of Dunfermline Track and Field's eight competitors recorded PBs, which included first and second places once more for Sean (3.92m) and Lottie (3.84), and a fifth place for Sophie (3.36m), while all of the 'B' team registered new bests.

The latter also shone in the shot put, where Finlay (3.55m) and Murron (4.44m) each threw new top distances, while Sean (5.29m, PB) led the 'A' team's efforts, finishing second overall.

There were PBs for Lottie (4.33m) and Sophie (4.17m), while Lochlan (4.47) threw a best distance of the season.

A superb run by the 'A' team in the relay saw them finish first, and collect the winners' trophy, with 817 points, while the 'B' team finished in an impressive 10th place out of 16 overall.

Meanwhile, two club teams made the final six in their age groups in the 4x200m format at the finals of the National Indoor Relay Championships.

The under-13 boys' team of Gregor Fraser, Finlay Gaughan, Luke Hamilton and Lochlan Walker finished fifth initially but, after another club were disqualified, they were promoted to fourth, finishing just two seconds outside the bronze-medal position.

Similarly, the under-17 girls – Ellie Candlish, Shayna Asamoagh, Kirstin Penman and Darcie Black – finished fourth originally in their race but were also promoted, this time into the medals.

Their bronze was achieved with a time of 1:49 which, not only was just half a second away from gold, but took another second off the age group and club records they had set two weeks prior.
