THE surprise in the timing of Kelty Hearts’ title win saw a full-on celebration by the players delayed for a week.

But, while members of the squad were ready to toast their League Two success on Saturday, Jamie Barjonas insists that they’re determined to end an historic campaign by picking up as many points as possible before thinking about making the step up next season.

The midfield star, who joined in the summer from Rangers, netted his ninth goal in maroon with a spectacular volley in last Friday evening’s draw at Edinburgh City, Kelty’s first match since being crowned champions in their debut SPFL campaign.

Barjonas, 23, has been a key player, featuring 37 times for Kevin Thomson in all competitions, and was “buzzing” to win his first winner’s medal – even if he was caught off guard by when it happened.

“It probably came as a wee bit of a surprise because we didn’t really think Albion (Rovers) were going to turn Annan over, but it was brilliant,” he told Press Sport.

“It’s what we’ve worked all season for and it got to a stage where we were thinking, ‘We just want to get this done’.

“It was really good to get it done and we thoroughly deserved it.

“Now we’re just looking forward to seeing out the season with as many wins as we can get.”

Barjonas was speaking after the match at Ainslie Park, where he jokingly likened his goal to Paul Gascoigne’s effort against Scotland at Euro 96, and revealed that the squad were set to enjoy a celebration the following day to mark what he feels is a deserved success.

“The boys have done well all season.

“I think there’s maybe been a couple of blips – obviously Annan on Boxing Day (where Kelty lost 5-1) was a big one – but, overall, I think we thoroughly deserved to win the title,” he continued.

“At the end of the day, I’m just buzzing, and it really is just a pleasure to play in this team.

“I’ve probably been at the other end of the table, when I was at Ayr and Partick Thistle (on loan), so to be able to come here and get a winner’s medal, with the group we’ve got ... honestly, I’m over the moon.

“If you look at it, we’ve been at the top of the league all the way through the season so it was about staying positive, keep winning games, taking it game-by-game, and obviously it’s paid off, as you can see.

“I’m really delighted.”

On his goal, Barjonas laughed: “Decent – Gazza-esque, wasn’t it?

“It was either going there or it was going miles over the bar!

“I’m glad it went in.

“I’m gutted we couldn’t take the three points but I think we had enough chances to win about three games there.

“We just need to look to next week and hopefully get another couple of wins.”
