ATHLETES with Dunfermline Track and Field Club enjoyed an historic day by collecting medals at the Scottish Athletics Indoor League (SAIL) final.

Four teams from the club – the under-13 and under-17 boys, and under-15 and under-17 girls – joined five others in each of their respective age groups at the event, held at Glasgow's Emirates Arena.

The girls' under-17 quartet of Shayna Asamoah, Ellie Candlish, Darcie Black and Kirstin Penman finished on top of the podium, while Callum Newton, David Cuthbert, Oliver Morrison and Brook Ferguson won bronze for the under-17 boys, as did the under-13 boys.

Those with the lowest scores following the conclusion of eight events would take home the prizes and, with a total of 26, the under-17 girls finished ahead of Glasgow Victoria Park and Giffnock North in the race for medals.

Individual performances included Shayna winning the 60 metres and 300m; Darcie winning the 200m with a season's best of 27.4 seconds, and the long jump with a PB, and new indoor female club record, of 5.34m; a season's best of 2:57 for Kirstin in the 800m; and a second place for Ellie in the high jump, thanks to a leap of 1.50m.

The boys secured third with 34 points, finishing behind Falkirk Victoria Harriers and Giffnock North, and Callum led the way with victory in the 200m, courtesy of a PB of 24.93, and a third place in the 60m hurdles.

There were new best times for Oliver (56.46) and David (2:13) in the 400m and 800m respectively, while Brook's shot put throw of 8.08m was a season's best, before Matthew Tait claimed the highlight of the day with a new SAIL, and club, record of 2.02m in the high jump.

Although on the day they were scored fourth, Dunfermline's under-13 boys were afterwards awarded joint-third place with VP Glasgow – behind Giffnock North and Shettleston – following a scoring error.

Charlie Hunter won the 60m hurdles in a time of 10.56, before adding a new club record of 1.40m for his age category in the high jump; Finlay Gaughan collected a 200m PB of 30.12; Lucas Alexander scored two season's bests in the 60m (9.37) and long jump (3.72m); and Gregor Fraser ran an excellent 2:55 in the 800m.

Sophie Thomas, Amy Jenkinson, Sarah Kane and Rachel Barnett ran for the under-15 girls, finishing fifth, with individual highlights coming in the shape of a 3.98m PB in the long jump for Rachel; Sophie winning the 200m in 26.66; Amy running a 9.86 PB in the 60m hurdles; and Sarah doing likewise in the shot put with a 7.32m throw.

On the same day as the league final, the SAIL relay championships were held, and included strong representation from Dunfermline Track and Field.

Shayna, Ellie, Darcie and Kirstin all competed once more for the under-17 girls and, after qualifying for the final, the third seeds produced a superb performance to win silver in a time of 1:50, finishing less than a second behind winners VP Glasgow.

The under-13 boys – the same quartet that won league bronze – also grabbed a silver medal, with the second seeds finishing just two seconds behind winners Law and District.

The under-15 girls also made their final, thanks to a heat time of 1:55, but they missed out on a podium place by finishing fifth.
