TALENTED youngsters with Dunfermline Rugby Club brought silverware back to West Fife after scrummaging down to win an Easter competition.

The club’s Primary 7 team were invited to take part in the Tracy Gray Memorial Tournament, which was hosted by Glenrothes Rugby Club, and they saw off all-comers to win the trophy.

The event, which took place last Sunday, saw six clubs – the hosts, Dunfermline, Madras, Howe of Fife, Kirkcaldy and Perthshire – take part from Primary 3-7.

Due to Easter commitments with other teams, only Dunfermline’s Primary 7s could make it, and they made sure they were in top form to bag the gold medals.

After seeing off Howe of Fife in their opening match, the team went on to defeat Glenrothes and Kirkcaldy, before sealing glory by winning their fourth match from four against Perthshire.

Their success comes after the club held a successful camp over the holiday period at McKane, which saw 50 youngsters take part over five days, honing their passing, kicking and tackling skills, as well as enjoying fun games and activities, which included rugby tennis, rugby golf and even an obstacle course.

This Sunday, Dunfermline will host a rugby festival of their own, featuring teams from Kirkcaldy, Kinross, Dundee Eagles, Melrose and Falkirk.

Meanwhile, the senior first XV’s title hopes are over after Orkney clinched the Tennent’s Caledonia Region League Division One crown the previous day.

Dunfermline had gone top after completing their fixtures but, with their rivals having five games in hand, they required favours from elsewhere.

Orkney had drawn level on points, moving top on points difference, going into Saturday’s game at Aberdeen Wanderers. They required one point from their final two outings to win the title, and promotion to National League Division Three, and did so with a 50-7 win, leaving Dunfermline in second place.
