RHYS BREEN is adamant that Dunfermline’s style of play is up there with the division’s best – and is determined they will remain in the Championship next season.

The 22-year-old, who made his 11th appearance in a Pars shirt at Partick Thistle on Saturday, is desperate to play his part in keeping the team in the league after a stop-start campaign.

Since penning a two-year deal in the summer, having left Rangers, the former Queen of the South loanee has had to contend with injuries and COVID-19 throughout his first season as an Athletic player.

That has also come during a year in which hopes of challenging for the title have switched to seeking safety, with the Pars sitting in ninth place, and one point behind Ayr United, going into the final game of the season tonight.

A win over Queens, already relegated, and a failure by the Honest Men to take three points against Thistle would ensure Dunfermline are playing Championship football next term and, this week, Breen said: “If we focus on ourselves we can’t go wrong if the outcome doesn’t work.

“It is one of those things; we just need to focus on ourselves, and this game on Friday is vital for us to win.

“Both us and Ayr are in the same position. It has gone right down to the last game; we just need to work hard this week and, by Friday, it is a no-brainer for us. We need to leave everything out on the pitch.

“It is the last game of the season and we want to make sure that we are secure for next season and make a much more positive start compared to the season that we have had this year.”

When asked about the team’s good home form, Breen replied: “When we play football it is the best that we will be, the way that we pass the ball we are probably arguably the best in the league.

“It is just the results, the final product and the wee bits that you usually don’t think will matter a lot in the game. Defensively, if you switch off for a second in the game, you will end up conceding a goal.

“Hopefully, this weekend we will leave it all out on the pitch and get the result that we need.

“The attitude from the boys is not something that we can question. Sometimes out on the pitch it just doesn’t work for us.

“We will prepare well for this weekend and we will definitely go out there and give it 110 per cent.”

Breen spent the latter part of last season on loan with the Doonhamers, playing alongside current boss, and ex-Par, Wullie Gibson, and he knows they won’t make life easy despite being relegated.

The defender doesn’t want Dunfermline to join them there, though, adding: “It has been a really tough season for me, with injuries and COVID.

“Every week I just want to be in the squad and participating. The past couple of months I have been working really hard. I just need to keep this up.

“Obviously, we have the break coming up but I need to make sure that I need to make sure that I am coming back the way that I have left.”
