SICK vandals have daubed a swastika on Dunfermline's war memorial.

One West Fifer spotted the graffiti last week, describing it as "disgraceful".

She contacted Fife Council who have now taken steps to have the offensive symbol removed from the memorial at Monastery Street.

Safer communities manager Dawn Jamieson urged anyone with any information about the vandalism to contact police.

"We share the community's sadness that the war memorial in Dunfermline was targeted in this way," she said.

"When we were made aware of the graffiti, we quickly arranged for it to be removed."

It is the latest in a series of incidents which included vandals leaving their mark with an octopus symbol on the Andrew Carnegie statue in Pittencrieff Park earlier this month.

The owners of Dunfermline restaurant Jack 'O' Bryan's in nearby Chalmers Street have also told the Press that vandalism has caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage to their property.

Ms Jamieson said: "Graffiti is a serious crime and cleaning it up is costly and money that could be better spent.

“We rely on the public coming forward and reporting graffiti. You can do this online at www.fife.gov.uk or by calling us on 03451 55 00 22.

"We'd urge anyone with information on the war memorial graffiti to contact Police Scotland by calling 101."
