AN HISTORIC year for Dunfermline is to be marked with a string of celebrations.

Events are being planned by Fife Council and its partners to mark 2022 which, as well as the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, will see Dunfermline Abbey’s 950th birthday and the 100th anniversary of the Alhambra Theatre.

A dedicated website – Dunfermline.com – has now been set up to provide all the necessary information of planned celebrations.

A Jubilee afternoon tea is being hosted by the Fife Provost when guests celebrating 70th birthdays or wedding anniversaries have been invited to attend.

And a family friendly event will take place on Sunday, June 5 in the Glen.

Gillian Taylor, on behalf of the Carnegie Dunfermline Trust, said: “We’re organising a ‘Picnic in the Park’ to bring people together to celebrate local talent in our beautiful Pittencrieff Park.”

David Williams, from the Church of Scotland, was looking forward to marking Dunfermline Abbey’s historic anniversary.

He said: “The church is excited to celebrate 950 years of continuous worship on the site and the opportunity, over the year, to recognise the substantial contribution Saint Margaret made to society and our nation’s heritage.”

The Alhambra's Claire Jones added: “We are thrilled to reach such a momentous milestone, with the venue’s centenary year. As we celebrate being Dunfermline’s oldest place of entertainment, and having entertained the public for 100 years, the Alhambra Theatre Trust look excitedly ahead to the future."

Dunfermline economy adviser for the town centre, Sunil Varu, said: “We hope to make 2022 a year where visitors, residents and businesses will create a buzz in the town. Keep an eye on Dunfermline.com/Dunfermline2022 and all the partner social media sites using #Dunfermline2022, to find how you can enjoy the celebrations.
