AN MS sufferer from Dunfermline has splashed out in the name of charity.

Despite being wheelchair bound, Iain Elder proved anything is possible when he white water rafted down the River Tay for his latest challenge.

The daring feat has helped raise over £1,300 for respite centre Leuchie House, where Iain is a regular, as well the Walk for Scott Foundation.

After previously completing a fundraising microlight flight and a 100-mile Rolling Round the Rex challenge to help the two charities, he decided to take to the water as a way of giving something back after his 60th birthday.

"It was awesome," Iain told the Press. "They had put me at the front and the only problem was my head was only just above the raft and any water coming over, got to me. I think I have got about three litres of the Tay in me still. It was brilliant.

"I was just trying to empower people and show them anything is possible."

Since his diagnosis with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis in 2009, Iain has been visiting Leuchie House in East Lothian for respite care.

The centre is a national charity dedicated to supporting people living with the long-term effects of a range of neurological conditions such as MS, Parkinson’s, MND and stroke, through individualised short respite breaks, as well as an essential break for their carers.

Iain had been considering taking a rest from his charity challenges however he has now decided he will not halt his efforts.

"Earlier in the year, I had decided that I keep knocking on folks' doors asking for people to donate money and thought about having a couple of years off to give them a rest.

"Then I was speaking to one of the guys after the event and he said why are you doing it. I said it was just to prove I can. I do it because I am still able to do it. If I take a couple of years off, I might not be able to do it in a couple of years. So the plan is there's going to be something.

"I have talked about bungee jumping or a zip line. I am not sure. What's the worst that can happen?"
