WEST FIFE drivers are counting the cost of rising fuel costs.

New figures show that the last week saw fuel prices rise by more than five pence per litre, with the average cost of filling your car sky-rocketing to almost £100.

The Press has looked into the best fuel prices available in West Fife right now which appear at the end of this article.

AA fuel price spokesman Luke Bosdet said: "Shock and awe is the only way to describe what has been happening at the pump during the half-term break. Little wonder that nearly half of drivers stayed at home for the Jubilee extended bank holiday.

"The forces behind the surge have been oil jumping back above 120 US dollars a barrel for the first time since late March, combined with petrol commodity prices being boosted by summer motoring demand.

"Drivers in rural areas suffer the most from record pump prices, mainly because of the longer distances they tend to drive. Pump price profiles around the area show a big difference between retailers and, at the moment, the supermarkets are substantially cheaper as they take longer to pass on cost increases."

The UK Government's Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) release weekly data which shows that the average cost of a litre of fuel had risen to 180.43p as of Monday.

However, the RAC say these numbers could be even higher, finding that this number has reached a record 181.85p.

This means for the average family car, with a tank of around 55 litres, the price of filling up with petrol has hit £98.18.

Furthermore, BEIS found that diesel prices rose from 181.56p per litre to 185.31p per litre over the same period.

RAC fuel spokesperson Simon Williams said: "The cost of filling a 55-litre family car with petrol has now topped £98 for the first time in history as a result of a litre hitting a new all-time high of 178.5p on Monday.

"Diesel also rose to yet another record by reaching 185.2p, which takes the cost of a tank to £101.86.

"With analysts predicting that oil will average $135 a barrel for the rest of this year, drivers need to brace themselves for average fuel prices rocketing to £2 a litre which would mean a fill-up would rise to an unbelievable £110.

"The oil price is rising due to increased demand for fuel across the world as China eases its COVID restrictions and America and Europe go into the peak summer driving season. All this, combined with a weaker pound at $1.2, means wholesale fuel costs more for retailers to buy. The wholesale price of diesel is fast approaching 160p a litre which, when you add 7p retailer margin and 20 per cent VAT, would take the pump price over the £2 mark.

"We strongly urge the Government to take drastic action to help soften the impact for drivers from these never-before-seen pump prices."
