DALGETY BAY judoka Kirsty Marsh is on her way to the Commonwealth Games after she was selected by Team Scotland.

The Destination Judo Club member was one of 50 athletes, across seven sports, who had their places in Birmingham next month confirmed last week to mark 50 days until the Games begin.

Marsh, a law student at the University of Edinburgh, is one of 11 judoka that will compete as the sport returns to the Commonwealth Games programme, having not been included at the Gold Coast event four years ago.

She follows in the footsteps of Stephanie Inglis (see column on facing page), who lives in Dunfermline, as a local judo contender competing for Team Scotland after she won a silver medal in the women's -57kg category at Glasgow 2014.

Birmingham will represent a Commonwealth Games debut for Marsh, who has impressed consistently on the mat after the sport returned in earnest following the ease of coronavirus restrictions.

Last year, she claimed a sixth Scottish National Age Band Championship title before going on to win a silver medal, in the -52kg class at the British Championships.

Those achievements followed a successful autumn season in which she gained her first points on the world ranking list with contest successes in European tournaments, such as the senior European Cup in Sarajevo and Dubrovnik respectively, both of which saw her place seventh.

Earlier this year, Marsh retained her female -57kg title at the Scottish Student Sport Judo Championships, before going on to compete at the Warsaw European Open and the Prague European Open.

The intake of 50 athletes, announced last Wednesday, took the total number confirmed in the squad to 119.

Elinor Middlemiss, Team Scotland Chef De Mission, said: "It is a real honour to represent Scotland and I am really pleased for the athletes who have been selected. There is a real depth of experience and potential in this squad and I have no doubt that our more experienced members of the team will actively support those who are making their Games debut.

"The excitement for Birmingham 2022 is now really starting to build and I am really looking forward to watching our athletes in action this summer and hearing the roar of support from our fans in the stands."

Confirmed to be joining Marsh in Birmingham is Dunfermline lawn bowler Sarah Jane Ewing, who will take part as a director for para bowler Robert Barr.

Pitreavie AAC athlete Nicole Yeargin has reached the qualifying standard for the 400 metres in athletics, while swimmer, and former Woodmill High pupil, Emma Russell, and ex-Carnegie Swimming Club members Tain Bruce and Mark Szaranek, have been nominated by the Scottish Swimming Birmingham 2022 selection group to Commonwealth Games Scotland.

The Games take place from July 28 to August 8.
