A 55-YEAR-OLD man has been jailed for sexually assaulting a woman in Dunfermline.

Hugh Devaney, of Burt Street, Wellwood, was convicted after a jury trial at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.

He was found guilty of a charge that on May 17, 2020, at an address in Dunfermline, he sexually assaulted a woman by kissing her, leaning over her, removing her lower clothing partially, placing his hand inside her lower clothing and touching her.

He admitted a second charge that on a journey to Dunfermline police station, he made sexually-inappropriate comments and gestures and made offensive and abusive remarks repeatedly to two officers.

When Devaney returned to court for sentencing, Sheriff Charles Macnair said: “This was a sexual assault in public. She repeatedly said ‘No’ but you carried on regardless.”

The sheriff imposed consecutive jail terms of 18 months and 135 days. He also put Devaney on the sex offenders' register for 10 years.
