PLANS to build 33 affordable homes and a social hub on the site of the former Pitcorthie Primary School in Dunfermline have been approved.

Robertson Homes, in partnership with Fife Council, submitted proposals in September last year.

All of the properties will be single-storey, semi-detached and terraced bungalows.

The social hub will be used as a base for staff members who are providing community care to residents and as a social meeting place for the residents.

The plans include landscaping, car-parking, a vehicle access road from Aberdour Road, pedestrian and cycle links, new trees and open green space.

There were five letters of objection, with concerns including the layout, noise, privacy, traffic and flooding.

A council report said: "The proposed delivery of 33 affordable housing units with associated access, landscaping and open space will contribute towards the redevelopment of the former Pitcorthie Primary School site and bring a vacant site back into use.

"The proposal will have a positive impact on the visual amenity of the area and will provide a good level of residential amenity for future occupiers."

The council approved plans to close Pitcorthie PS in April 2014.

The decision was 'called in' by the Scottish Government but, in October 2014, ministers confirmed that it would not be overturned.

The building was later demolished and the site remained vacant for several years.

Plans emerged for a new nursery on part of the site and the Beanstalk Family Nurture Centre opened in August last year. The bungalows will be built next to it.

Robertson Homes, based in Stirling, have also got the nod to build 85 affordable homes on the site of the former Blacklaw Primary School.
