PUPILS from North Queensferry have spruced up the Forth Bridge picnic area.

The primary school kids have teamed up with Network Rail and Balfour Beatty's Forth Bridge refurbishment team to plant trees and flowers at the Battery Road site ahead of its re-opening.

Creating a colourful display in the planters and and planting a small tree as a reminder of their hard work, the Primary 3-5 classes had a great time learning about rail safety from the British Transport Police while they bettered their community.

Lee Waugh, acting headteacher at North Queensferry Primary School, said: “The children had a wonderful morning developing their gardening skills and learning about how to stay safe near the railway.

"I know the children will take great pride in what they have achieved today, especially as they watch the tree they planted grow.”

The picnic area is set to re-open later this month and the children's contributions will be a welcome sight.

Jeremy Spence, programme manager for Network Rail, said: “It was a great morning and it was lovely to see the kids taking such an interest in their local community.

"We’re delighted to be working with North Queensferry Primary School to improve the picnic area for the wider community, especially with the backdrop of this iconic piece of railway infrastructure.

"We’re excited to have established this link with the school and look forward to continuing our engagement with them about staying safe by the railway and, of course, learning more about the Forth Bridge.”
