RENOWNED Dunfermline cameraman Doug Allan has swapped polar bears for pints in his latest documentary – set entirely in a pub beer garden!

The Bafta and Emmy award-winning wildlife photographer, who has worked extensively with David Attenborough, has been capturing wildlife in the unusual spot in support of a new green initiative.

"All the animals were residents of the garden and were used to people," he told the Press.

"It is just a case of sitting and waiting, nature works to consistent patterns.

"One of the rules of nature photography is that you simply have to be there and have to be prepared to not see very much; it is guesswork which turns into an ability to predict."

The beer garden, in Shropshire, saw visitors in the forms of bees, snails, and of course, pub-drinkers, though Doug said it wasn't so different to shooting polar bears and whales.

"The principles are the same, it would normally be bigger animals but knowing what is needed is the same whatever you are looking for," he continued.

"If you're looking for polar bears, you spend a lot of time sitting or driving, and in this case we still spent a lot of time sitting waiting."

The climate-conscious initiative is helping pubs tackle the country's nature depletion crisis, turning their gardens into wildlife sanctuaries.

"You have to wait for warmer weather to get some of the bees and insects, we were lucky to get a couple of good days," he said.

"I went out collecting and looking for things and picked up some snails and stuff after turning over pots.

"It was good fun, it was a very pleasant pub."

Working alongside Warner's Gin, who are developing a 'Nature Marque ' to encourage pubs to support wildlife, Doug developed the film in just four days at the end of May.

The cause is one close to the cameraman's heart.

"I am a resentful green," he added.

"I have managed to be made to feel sufficiently guilty about the effects of my travel on the planet.

"Aircrafts are a comparatively small part, I suppose it really depends on what you do when you get somewhere, we are in a transitional time."
