A DUNFERMLINE artist has been drawing support for the Pittencrieff Park peacocks after a brutal attack on two of the birds.

Cara Shanley, who lives in the city, first sketched and painted one of the peacocks in April, the original copy of which she donated to the sanctuary in the Glen.

She had already promised to donate 25 per cent of each print sale to the service, before the shocking news that the aviary had been broken into, where one of the birds, Malcolm, was killed and another, Louis, was injured.

"Just as I was organising this venture, shortly after I had visited, we were rocked with the terrible news about Malcolm’s death," she told the Press.

"It was truly shocking and upsetting, and I resolved to help fundraise for their wellbeing and protection as much as I could by extending the first limited print-run, which had quickly sold out, as long as people wanted to order them."

Thanks to support from Dunfermline firm Printing Services Scotland, Cara has been able to donate £10 from each sale to the cause.

She sells small framed prints in the Abbot House gift shop, and larger A3 sizes are available to buy from her directly.

After studying Fine Art in Edinburgh and Publishing in Stirling, followed by work with the National Museum of Scotland and National Galleries of Scotland, Cara started her business, Sketching Fife, in 2020 to celebrate "everything about our local area and city".

"I began with sketching one place in Fife every single day of the year, posting them online, and it quickly grew into the small business that I love," she added.

"I’ve worked in close conjunction with the beautiful shop in Abbot House to develop my range, as well as other small gift shops who stock my work in places like Kirkcaldy and Falkland, and a variety of small businesses and heritage and tourism organisations, including Visit Dunfermline and the Carnegie Trust.

"I usually sketch local buildings, street scenes and landscapes, which have been very popular with locals and visitors alike.

"They’re available as framed prints, greetings cards, postcards, coasters, mugs and calendars. Sketching Fife has really taken off and I’m very grateful for everyone’s support."

Hand-painted A3 peacock prints are available from Cara directly by messaging the Sketching Fife Facebook page or emailing sketchingfife@gmail.com.
