A BIG-HEARTED volunteer celebrated a landmark day by donating of all of her birthday gifts to the hospice.

Paula Carroll turned 40 in style at a special birthday bash in the Tontine Hotel surrounded by her friends and family.

The Greenockian, who has volunteered with Ardgowan Hospice for 10 years, chose to donate all of the £1,500 gifted to her by friends and family to the compassionate place of care that she says 'her heart belongs to'.

Kind Paula also donated her special birthday cake in the shape of her dogs Poppy and Henrik to Ardgowan to be shared between staff, volunteers and patients.

Paula, who has mainly volunteered within the hospitality team during her decade-long stint, says she wanted to help the hospice recover from the crippling impact of the pandemic.

She told the Tele: "I had a brilliant night with my friends and family celebrating my birthday, but that was all I wanted.

"I don't need anything material, I wanted to give the hospice everything as they have had such a hard time of it during Covid-19.

"The hospice is my favourite place and I've met so many people who have become friends for life there over the years.

"I feel very lucky to be able to volunteer with Ardgowan and this was just my way of giving a little something back."

As well as helping out at events, Paula has offered her services to hospice shops, garden projects and fundraising days such as bag packing in local supermarkets.

Her efforts gained the attention of Greenock actor and hospice patron Martin Compston, who also sent Paula a happy birthday greeting.

Paula added: "I am a big fan of Martin and it was so nice of him to send me a message.

"It really made my day extra special."

Lynsey Young, pictured with hospice fundraiser Leonna Gallacher, says Paula is always 'the first to offer help' when it is needed.

She said: "Paula is always the first to answer any requests for volunteers, she is an absolute star.

"She is amazing and we are so grateful to her for all she does.

"We are so lucky to have her - she is a hugely popular volunteer and this gesture was simply incredible."

Paula, who is supported by proud mum Winnie, has worked with the hospice's Bridget Maunders since starting her volunteering journey.

The hospitality manager said: "Paula responds quickly to a call for help and will always be there when she can.

"One day she will be taking patients for a cup of tea, the next she will be mopping the stairs and keeping the hospice clean and tidy.

"She is so popular with her colleagues across the two buildings - she always has a willing attitude and the biggest smile.

"Nothing is too much trouble for Paula, it is a privilege to have her on the team."
