A WEST Fife swimmer has been selected for Scottish Swimming's National Junior Team (SNJT) for the upcoming season.

Matthew McMillan, 15, is an Inverkeithing Competitive Swimming Club (INCAS) member and joined his Scottish team-mates recently at Tollcross for the Glasgow international swim meet.

Representing the national team meant access to support from Scottish Swimming’s performance and support staff, as well as sharing a hotel and meals with the Scottish Commonwealth Games team.

Competing in a range of events, Matthew managed to qualify for two junior finals as well as the men’s 400 metres individual medley A final. Across the weekend, personal bests were either matched or bested.

The three-day meet provided ample competitive experience for the youngster, who now focuses on the fast-approaching British Summer Championships, an invitational meet that sees the top 24 swimmers in each event compete against their peers in an ultimate end-of-season competition.

Matthew’s coach, Barry McMillan, said: “We’ve been putting real trust and focus into the process and it’s paying off. He’s done the work both in and out of the pool and I look forward to see what he produces in the remainder of the season.”
