TWO primary school pupils can now walk into an art gallery in Dunfermline and see their their prize-winning works on public display.

Emily Kellichan, from Bellyeoman PS, took first place in June in a competition promoted by Dunfermline United Burns Club with her entry, 'My Heart Is In The Highlands'.

As part of her prize Fire Station Creative agreed to exhibit her work and they also found space to hang Tilly Pitt's drawing too.

The McLean's PS pupil's 'To a Mouse' was runner-up in the competition.

A post from Fire Station Creative said: "We are delighted to announce that the winners of the Robert Burns artwork competition are on display in our cafe."

The art venue's managing director, Ian Moir, judged the competition.

While Emily and Tilly took first and second place, the following pupils were highly commended: Samuel Wood, Touch Primary; Rosie Turner, Commercial Primary; Reeann Gagnon, Lynburn Primary; and Erin Lane, Masterton Primary.

Ian previously told the Press: “We went round six different schools and it was great to see the smiles on the kids’ faces when we handed over the prizes.

"Interestingly, some of them didn’t know they had won so hopefully that’s a memory that stays with them for the rest of their lives.

“I think some children don’t realise how talented they are so hopefully the validation this gives them will encourage them in their artwork.”

It’s the first such competition held by the club since the 1930s but will now become an annual event and could entice more schools and pupils to take part.

Emily’s artwork will feature on the cover of the club’s programme for their Burns Supper in January while the other works will feature inside.

All six pieces will later go on display in Pittencrieff House.

Asked about his own prize-winning schooldays, Ian recalled: “I think it was the Carnegie Dunfermline Trust that ran the competitions when I was at primary school.

“I remember I drew a pheasant and I won. My uncle asked for the picture and still has it to this day, hanging in his house.”
