CONFIDENCE is high in the Pars camp after a strong start to the season and Matty Todd is riding high on that wave.

The 21-year-old has been an ever-present in James McPake’s team so far, in both the Premier Sports Cup and League One, the latter of which sees them unbeaten after five matches.

Had it not been for a refereeing call that Todd described as a “fair goal” and a mistake by referee Grant Irvine, who the boyhood Dunfermline fan “made my feelings felt” towards, they would be heading to Queen of the South this weekend on their own at the top of the table.

As it is, goal difference separates them from the team they drew with on Saturday, Airdrieonians, but the midfielder is content with the start they’ve made following relegation last season.

In addition, he is delighted that his current boss has shown faith in his ability to play in his natural position, having spent time last term deployed as a full back.

Speaking to Press Sport this week, he said: “Playing at full back last season, I thoroughly enjoyed that, but I think most people know my main position is a centre midfielder, and I’m really enjoying playing back in there.

“Thankfully, the manager’s trust in me is helping with my confidence as well, and I’m thoroughly enjoying my role in the side at the moment.

“It’s huge (his manager’s confidence in him). He asked me in the first couple of weeks in pre-season where I’d rather play, and it’s something that I said, I’d rather play in midfield.

“He’s given me that opportunity in there to show him what I’m capable of, and I’m glad he’s stuck with it and I’m playing there this season.

“I’m playing week-in, week-out, so obviously I’m doing something right in the team. I’m just glad I can help the team in some way.

“Confidence is really high at the moment.

“I’m really enjoying playing week-in, week-out, and something that I want to add is goals and assists to my game.

“It’s something Dave (Mackay, assistant manager) and the manager keep egging me on to do, is start scoring, so hopefully I can pick up one on Saturday, and kick-on from there.”

Todd has already netted this season, against Alloa Athletic on the opening day of the League One campaign, to take his total tally in a Pars shirt to four.

While hoping to find the net at Queen of the South this weekend, he’s focused on helping the team to maintain their unbeaten start and strengthen the bond that already exists between the players.

“We’re a close-knit group this year and there’s a load of confidence in the group at the moment,” he continued.

“Most of the group was here last season when we couldn’t stay in the Championship but we took time over the summer to reflect on the poor season that it was, and we’ve come back stronger and better for the season ahead.

“Results speak for themselves. The main objective is just to start getting the club back winning games and, at the moment, I think we’ve done that.”
