A "WEE" hair salon in Rosyth has been named as the best in the Kingdom thanks to its loyal customers.

Caraig Hairdressing on Heath Road won the title last week in the regional round of Scotland's Business Awards, much to the surprise of owner Julie Donaldson.

"It was just an opportunity to get dressed up, I didn't expect anything at all!" she told the Press.

"We are just a wee salon, customers nominated us and all the votes were from customers, it's lovely – especially after the last few years.

"We were closed for eight months and there were points where I didn't know if we would be able to re-open.

"It's a lovely wee team, we have a lot of fun, we have the 'best bants' in Fife!"

The business has been open for eight years and Julie says the team receive a lot of repeat customers, owing to their welcoming and chatty manner.

She thinks this is what won them the award, which will see Caraig go through to the next round to be considered for the Best Hair Salon in Scotland title.

"They send in secret shoppers," she explained.

"I have no idea who it was, I am just wondering what on earth the conversation was."

During the months where strict pandemic restrictions forced her salon to close, Julie kept busy working for NHS 24, though she says the job wasn't for her, and that she has "every respect" for people who work for the service.

She couldn't wait to get back to doing what she does best, and says that being allowed to open again was an emotional experience, for both her staff and clients.

"You couldn't do the job without enjoying being around people – after lockdown we had people who cried when they got a hair cut," she said.

"There were people who hadn't even had human touch, it was quite overwhelming, it was a nice thing to be able to do for people.

"I want to say a big thank you to all our customers who voted for us, it is a privilege to do their hair."
