SPEED limits could be reduced on several Dunfermline roads after concerns were raised by local councillors.

Members of the City of Dunfermline area committee agreed a motion asking for Fife Council transportation officers to review speed limits – and look at possible safety measures – on Lapwing Drive, Carnegie Avenue and Whitefield Road.

Committee convener, Councillor James Calder, had made the call after having residents express safety fears.

He explained: "For a few years as a local councillor in Dunfermline South, I have had a number of concerns raised about the 40mph speed limits along Lapwing Drive and Carnegie Avenue. I have also heard similar issues on Whitefield Road in the Dunfermline North ward.

"I brought forward this motion to bring a report back to the committee at some point in the coming half-year to look at options we can consider to reduce speed limits on these roads.

"We have had the Parent Council getting in touch with local councillors for Masterton Primary and also had families that live at the bottom end of Lapwing Drive raise concerns because their children are having to cross the road to get to the school bus and there's not a crossing there. It is a very concerning thing for these families there.

"I have also heard worries about the speed of vehicles going along the road, issues about noise pollution, particularly lorries going to Amazon."

Councillor Jean Hall Muir also asked for council officers to look at other measures as well as speed reductions.

"Perhaps increase side walks, cross walks," she said. "I would hate for such concerns to simply be a yes or no decision. I support the motion but if each report to committee can explore additional traffic-calming measures."

Councillors agreed that they would ask the council to look at options to reduce the speed limits and produce reports for each road with cost and resource implications.
