A DALGETY BAY couple have taken the next step with their business venture and taken over an Aberdour cafe.

Xen and Sabrina Larg started For Food Sake in 2021, offering their customers bespoke Heat@Home meals prepared by Chef Xen which were then hand-delivered for their customers to finish cooking.

Now, almost two years later, they are expanding their homemade business and have taken over Cafe at Number 16 in Aberdour.

Sabrina, who works full-time and runs the technical aspects of For Food Sake, joked: "Xen isn't very good with anything technical so basically I'm the brains and he's the talent!

"It's my husband that's the chef but during COVID he was made redundant from Scone Palace – he was the head of catering there and I'm the business development manager at a law firm. We were sitting there thinking, what are we going to do? So we registered with the council and we decided that we would do our Heat@Home meals."

Xen, originally from Glenrothes, has extensive Heat@Home bistro or Mexican menus from which customers can choose, he then prepares the meals to order, they label them and then deliver the meals to customers, who heat them up in their oven for just 30 minutes.

After that, they are left with restaurant-standard meals with high-quality ingredients, prepared by a chef to be enjoyed in their own home.

She continued: "With the Heat@Home, we find people will order us for family get-togethers because they want to maybe have it at their house or they don't necessarily want to go out to a restaurant because it's it is costly – especially if you involve alcohol.

"We get a lot of people that take us on holiday as well for their first night way so they order it and then take it to a lodge with them and then we've got our regular customers, we have a couple that has ordered from us every Saturday night for the past two years, literally!

The couple found their business model to be successful but with Canadian expat Sabrina working full-time from home they were left with a need to find a commercial space.

That's when they found Cafe at Number 16.

"At the moment, our cafe is only open between 10am to 3pm because we have to vet the staff in, they're completely new and some of them don't come from hospitality backgrounds. I got a lot of applications from really young people so I've taken on a couple of young people that need training," she said.

The shorter opening hours allows Xen to still fill his outside catering orders but the cafe is set to expand its hours once their new chef, Darren Brown joins. Darren and Xen worked together previously in Edinburgh and they are set to reunite next week.

Sabrina added: "We use all fresh ingredients, hand-prepared by a professional chef. Our motto was restaurant-quality food, to heat at home!"
