TWO medals awarded to Dunfermline Athletic players in 1887 have realised nearly £3,000 in auction.

The pieces, collected by separate sources, were won by different members of the same team and were sold just months apart.

Both shield-shaped yellow metal fob medals were presented following the Pars win in the Fife Cup and the Fife second XI Cup and realised £1,400 each.

The first had been given to G Bathgate, who missed out on a first attempt at a semi-final match against Lassodie when it was abandoned due to fighting, but did play in the rearranged game at Kingseat, where his team won 5-1.

The final, against Burntisland Thistle, took 36 days and three matches to settle but, following a near-riot, protests and two replays, Dunfermline Athletic brought their first trophy back to East End Park.

The winning team, who left Crawford's Park in Cowdenbeath with a 3-1 win, was made up of Farquharson, Lamond, Ross, Campbell, Dewar, Westwood (captain), Sandilands, Toddie, Rolland, Bathgate and Nicol.

The second medal, with DAFC inscribed on the reverse, was achieved after the same competition by A Rolland, a reserve player who did not feature in either the first or second round teams in the Fife Cup.

He also did not play in the semi-final against Lassodie but did play in the re-arranged match in Kingseat where he scored a hat-trick.

The medals were auctioned by Gavin Durward Tavendale in the Rosewell (Midlothian) auction branch of Thomson Roddick Callan.
