DUNDEE have offered fans an apology for the "inconvenience" caused by last night's late Pars cup tie call-off.

Just 45 minutes before the SPFL Trust Trophy quarter-final was due to kick off, an inspection of the surface by match referee, Graham Grainger, and his team deemed it unplayable due to rainfall throughout the day.

Ahead of the game at the Kilmac Stadium at Dens Park, there had been no indication that the match was in any doubt.

However, after the match officials arrived at the stadium, they went out on to the pitch with a ball, and began testing areas around the penalty area at the Bob Shankly Stand end - where the Dunfermline fans were to be housed - and around the halfway line.

They deemed that the ball was not bouncing as it should due to water on the pitch, leading to the tie being called off.

After the postponement, Dundee, more than an hour after the decision was made, posted on social media: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused by tonight’s late call off.

"We will advise of rescheduled date as soon as it is confirmed."

However, a number of Pars fans took to social media to voice their anger at the late call off, some of whom had already arrived in Dundee when it was announced - whilst others arrived at the ground after the call-off, having been unaware of the news.

A rearranged date for the game will be announced in due course, and will be the third postponed match that will needed to be slotted into Athletic's fixture schedule.

League One matches at Airdrieonians, on December 17, and at home to Falkirk, on January 2, are awaiting new dates after they also fell victim to the weather.
