STEPS will be taken to try to avoid further flooding in Dunfermline's Pittencrieff Park and the area around Milton Green and Forth Street.

Locals became concerned that a blocked culvert at the south side of the Glen could lead to the Tower Burn overflowing and into surrounding streets.

It's been the scene of serious flooding in the past and one resident, who asked not to be named, sent in photos showing the trash screen clogged up with sticks, leaves and other debris.

She said: "It's all choked up following all the rain. It’s already been reported to the council by someone and workers were seen looking at it on Monday but it's still the same today and any more heavy rain may cause the burn to burst.

"The park was already severely flooded last week."

A Fife Council spokesperson said: "This is a location that's checked regularly and cleared every two to three weeks.

"It was cleared again on Tuesday and there's a machine coming in next week to clear the harder-to-reach debris."

There have been problems with flooding in the area and, back in November 2015, a blocked culvert caused major problems. Residents had warned just a few months before that the "constantly clogged" drain was a risk. Forth Street was submerged by fast-flowing surface water and it led to a stone wall and railings at Milton Green/Lovers Loan collapsing, damaging two parked cars.

Councillors had demanded extra measures to try to prevent it happening again with an early warning system and lights installed.

A report the following month had said the cause of the incident was solely as a result of the blockage at the trash screen and not a failure of Dunfermline’s flood prevention scheme, which was delivered eight years late and £30 million over budget.
