PARS defender Rhys Breen is confident that they won't let Saturday's cup disappointment affect them as they prepare to try and continue their quest for success in another knockout competition tonight.

James McPake's League One leaders travel to Dundee for an SPFL Trust Trophy quarter-final tie, which will be played at the third attempt after two postponements in as many weeks.

The Championship promotion chasers, like their opponents, suffered penalty shoot-out deflation in the Scottish Cup on Saturday, bowing out to top flight St Mirren.

Dunfermline gained plaudits for their performance against Partick Thistle, creating a number of good chances throughout, but were beaten on spot-kicks after a 1-1 draw.

Breen, who was fouled by Lee Hodson in the box to allow Kyle Benedictus to give Athletic a first half at Firhill, wasn't too despondent and hopes they can produce a similar showing at Dens Park.

"I'm proud of the boys. Even the gaffer said that after the game," he said post-match at the weekend.

"I thought the work-rate and the way that we played, on a difficult pitch, was amazing.

"The spirits are still high. We can't let that affect us and we go on to the game on Tuesday.

"From Deniz all the way to the front three, and even the boys that didn't get on, I thought everybody played a part. Sometimes I think you learn more from a loss than you do winning every week. We're ready to go again for Tuesday.

"You need to take your chances in these kind of situations. You don't get them often and, when you do, I feel like you need to take them. It can change a game.

"We've gone into the changing room and the spirit's still high. We're not going to let this affect us."

Assistant manager Dave Mackay, who confirmed Craig Wighton was taken off at Firhill due to fatigue, added: "They (Partick) are a team that's going well in the Championship.

"They had a sticky patch for a couple of months but, at the beginning of the season, they were flying.

"They've hit a good run of form again just now, so they're near the top of the Championship looking to get into the Premier League, but we've just proven there that we're at that sort of level.

"We have to prove that week after week, and make sure we make doing our stuff in the league, and hopefully we get there by turning in performances like that."
