DUNFERMLINE Athletic Ladies earned their first win of the new Biffa Scottish Women’s Football League (SWFL) East Division season against Linlithgow Rose last Sunday.

Angie Comrie’s team, who lost at Bonnyrigg Rose in their opening fixture, earned a 5-2 win at Pitreavie, but it wasn’t to be for Aberdour SDC Ladies in their first home match.

The newly-created team, coached by Ross Wortley, entertained Bonnyrigg after being defeated at Central Girls in their opening game but, despite scoring their first competitive goal of the campaign, they were beaten 9-1 at Hawkcraig Park.

Pars boss Comrie, who saw two of her new charges among the goals, which were shared between four different scorers, commented: “We got back to winning ways and it was a great reaction from last week’s defeat.

“It was a great team effort; everyone played their part in the win. From the off you could see they had a point to prove.

“A couple of lapses in concentration let Linlithgow get two goals, which was disappointing, but the girls’ heads never went down and they battled until the end.

“Kelly (Armstrong, coach and general manager of the Pars Foundation) and I liked what we saw on Sunday. The effort everyone put in training showed. All we ask is the girls give everything for the 90 minutes, and they do.”

This afternoon, Dunfermline host Livingston Development, with the venue having been reversed, in a 1pm kick-off.

Wortley, meanwhile, has been encouraged by the efforts of Aberdour despite losing both of their opening fixtures.

“The first game, it was what it was. We went out and you could see everyone was nervous, which was strange, because everyone was up for it,” he said.

“It was our first proper, competitive game, so there was nerves. It was hard, as they’ve not played together before, and you could see that. Central have been together for years, and they hemmed us back in our own half in both halves.

“We lost our goalkeeper in the first 30 minutes but our sub keeper who came on, and she’s only 15, was outstanding.

“On Sunday, I said to them, give me your all, and I changed the formation, which we will do until I find one that suits us.

“We battled well. We lost three goals by half-time but they went out and gave everything. They were physical but I like that side of it. We were in their half a lot more and had a few chances.”

Skye McKell, with a penalty, had the honour of scoring the team’s first goal, and Wortley added: “They’re chuffed with that.

“They know it’s going to be hard for the first half-dozen games, they know where we’re going wrong, and know they have to get their heads down and work hard, but we’ll get there.”

This Sunday, Aberdour travel to play Falkirk Women, on the community pitch at the Falkirk Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 2pm.
