FIFE’S Green MSP Mark Ruskell is hosting an online discussion on the future of the Mossmorran complex on Monday.

The event is open to members of the public and the next step in his campaign to secure a "fair and just transition" for workers at the gas plants and local residents living nearby.

Mr Ruskell explained: “Mossmorran isn’t just a nuisance neighbour for many folks in the community. It’s also Scotland’s third largest polluter.

“But the site faces an uncertain future, particularly with net zero targets on the horizon and global business turning away from plastics due to environmental concerns.

“The report I commissioned last year made it very clear that a cleaner, sustainable future for the plant is possible – with a joined up approach that has workers at its very heart.

"What we need to see at Mossmorran is a site-specific just transition plan, a Fife-focused version of what we are seeing for oil and gas in the north east of Scotland."

The site consists of the Fife Ethylene Plant, operated by ExxonMobil, and Shell UK's Fife NGL Plant.

After repeated bouts of unplanned flaring both firms were served with final warnings by SEPA in 2018 and, after more incidents, referred to the Crown Office in 2020 for possible prosecution.

ExxonMobil and Shell say major investment in their plants will significantly reduce the need for flaring – the burning of excess or waste gas – which is the main concern for local communities.

Mr Ruskell continued: "Climate proofing Mossmorran would save hundreds of jobs and provide a massive boost for Scotland’s efforts in reaching its net zero targets by 2045. But we need to see action, fast.

“I want to bring people together – workers, the local community, industry experts – to start the journey towards a fairer, greener and more sustainable future for Mossmorran.

“There’s simply no time left to waste.”
