A FIFE MSP has thanked Marie Curie nurses for all their hard work a dedication.

Roz McCall reflected on the work that the healthcare providers do in a debate on palliative care in Scotland, stating that their efforts and the support that they provide to families of those losing a loved one was "amazing".

Ms McCall said: “Marie Curie nurses do great work in Fife to support those with terminal illnesses and their families. The work done by Marie Curie in Mid-Scotland and Fife means that people who die can do so in a setting of their choice and with dignity.

“I do not think thanking the nurses is enough, the support they give people is amazing, and the statistics are a testament to their hard work."

In the Mid Scotland and Fife region, out of the 8,095 people who die each year, 7,285 have a palliative care requirement, showing the need for Marie Curie nurses within the region.

Within Fife, thanks to the hard work of Marie Curie Nurses, 95 per cent of patients have been able to die, with dignity in their place of choice.

However, Ms McCall argued that more must be done, as one in four people die without the palliative care they need in Scotland.

She called on the Scottish Government to do more to support Marie Curie, and those with a palliative care need.

She added: “It is still the case that people across Scotland are dying without the palliative care they need. The Government must do better, and the Health Secretary needs to focus on delivering the palliative care people need.”
