A FIFE Plastic-Free event guide has been launched in Dunfermline.

The publication offers event organisers practical advice and information on waste prevention, waste management and communication with vendors and event goers with the aim of achieving zero-waste, plastic-free events.

It also contains a checklist for stallholders and background information on the problems associated with compostable, balloons and glitter.

Plastic Free Fife says that despite last June’s ban on certain single-use plastics, events still generate a lot of plastic and other types of waste.

Many of the “compostable” single-use alternatives brought in since the ban can’t actually be composted in Fife and are scarcely more sustainable than the plastic items they have replaced.

The waste generated by events can be reduced by promoting reusable solutions and minimising single-use items. In 2019, the Dunfermline Children’s Gala saved over 6,000 pieces of plastic waste by making a few simple changes.

The guide, which was officially launched at Dunfermline's Grain & Sustain – Zero Waste Life in Fife on Thursday, was made possible thanks to Climate Action Fife's Small Grants Fund.
