AN official celebration to mark the Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort is to be held in Dunfermline.

There will be an afternoon tea hosted by the Lord-Lieutenant of Fife, Robert Balfour, and the Provost of Fife, Jim Leishman, for nominated guests at the Glen Pavilion on May 8.

Steve Grimmond, Fife Council Chief Executive, said: "Like most of the country, Fife Council will mark the King's Coronation with a day's holiday on Monday, May 8.

"This means that most staff will get an extra day off and most council buildings and services will be closed.

"However, we still intend to run some key services and will issue more detail after we've discussed plans with trade unions.

"Schools will also be closed on May 8. We appreciate that schools have been affected recently by national strike action.

"However, a national holiday has been declared and as a council we believe it's important that families across the Kingdom can spend the day together."

The afternoon tea event will be attended by guests who are nominated for their efforts in their local communities.

Mr Grimmond added: "Fife has many dedicated volunteers who work hard throughout the year, supporting a community or a cause and the Lord-Lieutenant and Provost wanted to use this Volunteers Day during the Coronation celebrations to say thank you for all that you do.

"We’re asking you to nominate a deserving volunteer from your community or organisation.

"The guests will be selected randomly, and successful nominees will receive two invitations (one for them and a plus one) by post in the coming weeks."

Nominations can be made by filling in an online form at www.fife.gov.uk/kingscoronation, by emailing civic.office@fife.gov.uk, calling 03451 55 55 55 ext. 440336, or writing to: Civic Office, Lynda Birrell, Fife House, North Street, Glenrothes KY7 5LT.

The deadline for nominations or applications is midnight on Monday, April 10, and names will be drawn on Tuesday, April 11.

Invites will be sent out during the week commencing April 17.

There is information available for those who would like to host their own event on the Fife Council Kings Coronation webpage.
