A FIFE family have opened a new bakery and patisserie in Dunfermline – and they've been delighted by the response of customers.

Maria and her husband, Michael Sava, opened Maria's Baking Stories on New Row at the end of March and since then has been overwhelmed at how well their "dream" is going.

She told the Press: "We started three years ago in lockdown from home, and it went really well, so we decided to move onto the next step and open the shop. I was always so passionate and wanted to open my own bakery and patisserie so it's a dream come true."

While the couple and their three kids are from Kirkcaldy, they decided to open up in Scotland's newest city.

She said: "The specific shop inspired us, it's in the right location and it has a lot of windows that make the shop really bright. It was an open plan shop so we had the chance to do it how we wanted."

They fully redecorated the store by themselves, turning the empty canvas into a vision in pink, complete with neon signs, a flower wall and even a swing with an angel wing painting on the back wall that makes for the perfect photo opportunity.

And taking the leap has certainly paid off as business has been booming for the new, dog friendly bakery.

She continued: "From the first day it has gone so well, it's getting really popular. So it was like a dream come true from the beginning and the people, they show so much love and support for us, and that's the most important thing for us.

"We want this place to be a nice and warm place for everyone to come and enjoy a nice cake and coffee, in the future, afternoon tea."

Both Maria and Michael bake in the store and their kids, Irene, 17, Andreas, 14 and Alexandra, 12, all help out on the front counter when they have some free time. Maria herself grew up in her family's bakery and she plans on continuing the tradition.

Maria's Baking Stories is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am. They close at 5.30pm Tuesday to Friday, 7pm on Saturdays and 5pm on Sundays.
