A TALENTED West Fife boxer has said she “can’t wait” to step out into the ring for what is set to be an historic event this weekend.

Niamh Mitchell, who last year won a gold medal at the EUBC (European Boxing Confederation) European Junior Championship, is set to headline an all-female card on a show hosted by her club, Bowhill Miners Boxing Club, this evening.

Competitors from as far afield as Canada, as well as from south of the border and across Scotland, will take part in the event, at Bowhill Community Centre, Cardenden.

Club coach, James White, said that the event would be the first of its kind in Scotland, and the 16-year-old Dunfermline High School pupil, who lives in Rosyth, is eager to showcase her talents in front of a home crowd.

“I can’t wait for it. It’s come in faster than I thought it would,” she told Press Sport.

“I’m really excited, although, when it gets a bit closer during the week, I’ll start to get nervous. I’ve got quite a big support behind me that are coming; I’ve sold so many tickets to family and friends, that I want to go out there and put on a show.

“It’ll be the biggest crowd that I’ve had. Normally, I’m away and in a wee bubble.”

In October, Niamh became the first female boxer to win gold for Scotland at a major international competition, taking victory in the 52kg light bantamweight category.

She is only the second Scot to win gold at the European Junior Championships, and only the seventh, male or female, to become a European champion at any level.

Niamh’s achievements saw her feted as Young Athlete of the Year, at the Scottish Sports Awards 2022, and named as the Press sponsored Sports Personality of the Year at the Dunfermline and West Fife Sports Council Sports Awards, which were held in February.

Preparations for Saturday’s show included travelling to France earlier this month for a Scotland versus France ‘Dual International’, which concluded a 10-day training camp for Boxing Scotland junior and youth boxers, and saw her win her bout.

Tickets for the show cost £25, with doors opening at 6.30pm for a 7.30pm start.
