ATHLETIC assistant manager Dave Mackay joked that he would "go in quietly" and celebrate their title-winning season despite being asked for selfies from elated supporters.

James McPake's number two insists that the players deserved the adulation from the fans for taking the team back up to the Championship at the first attempt when they received the League One title yesterday.

A stoppage-time Lewis McCann goal gave the Pars a 2-1 win over Clyde in their final home match of the campaign, completing a turnaround that saw Kane Ritchie-Hosler cancel out Cameron Salkeld's opener.

The victory was the icing on the sweetest of cakes for the champions, who have become the first Dunfermline side since before the Second World War to complete a league campaign unbeaten at home.

Following the trophy lift at a joyous KDM Group East End Park, supporters flooded on to the pitch to greet their heroes, with the players giving them memories to treasure by posing for photos.

When asked if he had been asked for any, Mackay joked: "I got a couple aye! I'll take that; changed days from when you're playing!

"The players deserve all the credit. They deserve all the selfies and the adulations - we'll just go in quietly and enjoy ourselves.

"It's good for the fans to enjoy it as well, after what happened last season, the disappointment.

"You've got to enjoy the good times as well.

"Sometimes it's good to get the fans on, I've been involved in some games like that and it makes it a bit better for the players, I think."

On the end result, which also extended their unbeaten league run to 23 games, Mackay commented: "It was great and it was brilliant that we managed to do it with a win.

"It was nowhere near our best performance of the season by a long shot, but we scored when it mattered, and it was great to win it on the day. Obviously, you're getting the trophy - it didn't want to be that wee bit of a damp squib before it, as the boys have put so much into it over the season.

"We're delighted that we got that last minute winner."

"You didn't want it to be a draw or a defeat or whatever - I don't think the boys have deserved that across the course of the season.

"It was some goal to win it as well. Clyde's goal was outstanding as well, to be fair.

"But for Lewis to do that in the last minute is brilliant - send them in happy."

Chris Hamilton, who captained the team for the day in place of the suspended Kyle Benedictus, said: "I'm delighted for all the boys; they've worked so hard all season. I'm delighted for the management staff, all the staff behind the scenes, because they work so hard.

"This day, and days like today, is for everyone."

Defender Ewan Otoo, who joined on loan from Celtic in February, added: "It feels excellent.

"Since the first day I've been here, this is what we were looking forward to. We knew we had work to do, but it feels great to get it done, and for a day like this, it's unbelievable."

We'll have more reaction, as well as a special supplement to honour Athletic's title win, in this Thursday's Press.
