FOUR of Athletic's title-winning stars have been named in the PFA Scotland League One team of the season.

Kyle Benedictus and Matty Todd, who have also been shortlisted for the divisional player of the year award, together with Deniz Mehmet and Josh Edwards, have made the final selection following votes cast by players across the division.

PFA Scotland, the independent trade union for professional footballers across the country, will host its annual awards ceremony on Sunday evening, when the winners of individual accolades will be announced.

Ahead of the event, the League One team of the year has been revealed, with Dunfermline having the joint-highest number within it alongside Airdrieonians.

Goalkeeper Mehmet – with whom talks are ongoing about a new contract, with his deal expiring at the end of the month – has been voted in as the stand-out number one, following a record-breaking season between the sticks.

The former Dundee United star, named by James McPake and Dave Mackay as the management team's player of the year at the club's recently-held awards evening, has kept 24 clean sheets in all competitions – 21 of those in the league – which is a new club best for a keeper in a single season, whilst their goals against tally of 21 is a new record for a league season, as are the 10 and 11 conceded in home and away league fixtures respectively.

Benedictus, who joined Dunfermline last summer from Raith Rovers, and was appointed club captain, missed only one competitive game this season – the final home match with Clyde, after which he lifted the League One trophy – after a red card in their third last match at Airdrieonians, and also contributed seven goals at the other end.

Edwards, who in January signed a contract extension to keep him at the club until the summer of 2024, also missed just one match in all competitions for the Pars, and scored four goals, one of which came in the league during a 1-1 draw with Clyde in January.

Making up the Pars quartet in the team of the year is Todd, who scored 11 goals in 40 appearances overall, and signed fresh terms in March to stay with his boyhood club until 2026.

The former Dunfermline High School pupil, together with Benedictus, will go up against Queen of the South's Ruari Paton, and Airdrieonians' Calum Gallagher – both of whom also made the team of the season – for the PFA Scotland League One Player of the Year.

The team of the season is: Deniz Mehmet (Pars), Cammy Ballantyne (Airdrieonians), Kyle Benedictus (Pars), Callum Fordyce (Airdrieonians), Josh Edwards (Pars), Adam Frizzell (Airdrieonians), Matty Todd (Pars), Aidan Nesbitt (Falkirk), Ruari Paton (Queen of the South), Calum Gallagher (Airdrieonians), Callumn Morrison (Falkirk).
